phaedrus. one of the most beautiful things ive read in a long time. if you havent heard of it, it was written by plato. it is a discussion of love between socrates and phaedrus. phaedrus begins the story by reading the speech of lysias. once you get through the letter, you realize that the love he speaks of is of an affair between a young man and an older man. there were some beautiful quotes in this book that i had to write down.
"lovers themselves admit that they are mad, not sane, and that they know that they are not in their right mind but cannot help themselves. how then can one expect that designs formed in such a condition will meet with their approval when they come to their senses?"
"in that case you have all the more reason to be afraid of those who are in love with you; they can be hurt in such a variety of ways and are apt to interpret anything as a personal slight."
"nevertheless, the truth may be that it is not the most insistent that you should favor, but those best able to make a return; not lovers merely, but those who show themselves worthy of what they ask; not those who will simply enjoy your youthful charms, but those who will share their possessions with you when you are older; not those who will boast of their success to others, but those whom modesty will keep completely silent; not those who are keen on you just for the moment, but those who will remain your firm friends for life; not those who will look for an excuse to break with you when their passion wanes, but those who will show themselves good men and true when your good looks have vanished."
